McNair Scholar Becomes White House Intern

Chanel Johnson, a former UC Davis McNair Scholar and current undergrad, will be spending Fall 2009 on the east coast participating in the White House Internship Program.

Chanel is a UC Davis senior double majoring in English and African and African American Studies. While at the White House, she will be conducting policy research for the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. Chanel’s McNair participation helped her achieve the internship as it demonstrated her work and experience with advocacy groups.

After her internship and graduation, Chanel would like to go on and earn a doctorate degree and establish a private elementary school in Oakland, CA. Her goal is to provide the economically disadvantaged in her community with an affordable, effective, culturally based education.

Chanel is one of 100 interns selected from among some 6,000 applicants for the highly coveted positions. To learn more about White House Internships go http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/Internships.

McNair Scholar Wins Research Award at Statewide Symposium

On February 22-23, 2008, researchers from nine UC campuses gathered at UC Irvine to present and showcase their research in engineering, sciences and mathematics fields at the California Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CAMP).

CAMP was established to encourage and support completion of the Bachelor of Science degree by underrepresented minorities, and prepare them for graduate school. The symposium annually recognizes students’ research for originality, depth of understanding, and likelihood of sparking further research. This year, seven undergraduate researchers represented UC Davis at the symposium.

Congratulations to a UC Davis McNair scholar who was honored with the “Special Merit in Research” award:
